What Is a Daemon?

Ever notice your Intego software quietly protecting your Mac even when you haven't opened the app? That's not magic — it's a background process called a daemon, and it's a completely normal (and important) part of how Intego works. Here's what's actually happening behind the scenes.

What Is a Daemon?

Once installed and set up, Intego applications automatically launch and run in the background — you don't need to have the app open for it to protect your Mac. This background work is handled by a daemon: a process with no visible window or icon that quietly runs continuously, handling tasks like real-time scanning and protection.

Checking That the Daemon Is Running

You can confirm your Intego daemon is active using Activity Monitor (found in Applications > Utilities):

  1. Open Activity Monitor.
  2. Make sure you're viewing All Processes (Activity Monitor menu at the top, or the dropdown depending on your macOS version).
  3. Search for the relevant process name for your product:
  • Intego X9: search for "integod"
  • Intego ONE: search for "com.intego" — you'll typically see several related processes, such as com.intego.antimalware.engine, com.intego.cleaning.engine, com.intego.vpn.engine, and com.intego.general.engine, depending on which features (Antivirus, SmartClean, VPN) you have active.

If you see the relevant process listed, the daemon is running normally.

Making Changes to Your Settings

Since the daemon runs invisibly in the background, you'll still need to open the app itself from your Applications folder (or menu bar icon) whenever you want to view your protection status or make configuration changes.
