You may notice that Intego ONE and Activity Monitor show different memory numbers. This is usually normal because they measure different things. Here's why.
They're not measuring the same thing
Activity Monitor’s “Memory Used” shows the total amount of memory your Mac is using at that moment. Intego ONE looks at memory use differently. It checks whether the memory use is slowing down your Mac, not simply how full the memory is.
Why 100% memory usage doesn't always mean a problem
macOS is good at using all the available memory, even when your Mac is working normally. Here’s what may be happening:
- Caching: Your Mac uses some memory to store data it may need again soon. This helps it run faster. Your apps don’t need this data to work, so macOS can free the memory when needed.
- Compression: If your apps need more memory than is available, macOS can compress data from inactive apps to make room. In small amounts, this has almost no effect on performance.
- Swapping to disk: If more memory is still needed, macOS can move some data to your disk. This can affect performance more, but your Mac can continue running.
Apple calls the combined effect of these actions memory pressure. Memory pressure is a better way to tell whether your Mac is struggling than the “Memory Used” number alone. Your Mac can show 100% memory use while memory pressure is low. This can happen when most of the memory is being used for caching and no compression is taking place.
How Intego ONE shows memory pressure
Instead of showing only a memory percentage, which can look worrying even when your Mac is working normally, Intego ONE checks memory pressure and shows it using a simple color:
- 🔵 Blue graph: Memory pressure is normal. Even if memory use looks high, it isn’t slowing down your Mac.
- 🔴 Red graph: Memory pressure is high and may be slowing down your Mac. You may need to take action, such as closing apps you aren’t using.
The takeaway: A high memory number in Activity Monitor isn't necessarily something to worry about — it's often just macOS using available resources efficiently. Intego ONE’s color indicator shows when memory use is actually affecting your Mac, so you can focus on real performance problems instead of a number that only looks high.
