New Rule
The New Rule option enables creation of firewall preferences (i.e. which traffic to allow or restrict). Firewall rules can be configured as follows:
- The Application: Choose whether the rule applies to a specific application or any application attempting network access.
- The Action: Choose between Allow, Ask, or Deny network access for the rule.
- Traffic Direction Selection: Specify if the rule applies to inbound, outbound, or both directions of network traffic.
- Advanced Setting (optional): You can also apply the rule to a specific hostname, IPv6 or IPv4 address, and include the TCP/UDP port it will affect.
Security Switch
Security Switch blocks all network traffic on your network once enabled. Blocking all network traffic would create an impenetrable barrier, which is the ultimate firewall protection, but would also make the network or device unusable for all communication and services.
This feature is recommended for cases wherein a network is suspected of being compromised by malware or a threat actor; an immediate and total network block can contain the threat and prevent further damage.
Traffic Filtering Switch
The Traffic Filtering Switch enables the detection and management of application access to your network, thereby preventing threats to your Mac.
When a process attempts to access your network, a notification window will prompt you to either allow or deny access. If access is allowed, a rule will be created for that application or domain and will be listed in the Traffic Control Settings.
Traffic Control Settings
Within the Traffic Control Settings, a comprehensive interface is available for viewing, managing, and customizing your firewall rules.
On the accessory view section, the application displays the current number of network connections configured to:
- Allow network access
- Deny network access
- Prompt for network access
The content view section displays:
- A list of rules created for specific processes (e.g., Application, Domain).
- Options to review and alter configured Network rules:
- Reveal the process location in Finder.
- Change the rule action (e.g., Ask, Deny, or Allow).
- Edit the rule further.
- An option to remove the configured rule.
Note: Not all applications on your Mac will be listed here.
Traffic Insights
The Traffic Insights section will show you the network traffic statistics sorted by domain.
Within the accessory view, you will see the Domain-level statistics:
- Customize your view into the following periods: daily, weekly, or monthly
- View the amount of network traffic coming in and out.
Within the content view, you will see a list of all the following:
- All domains with network access.
- The amount of network traffic for that specific domain.
- The amount of RAM used by this domain.
- Deep dive to see what exactly has been used (e.g., which domain consumed data).
Traffic Stats
The Traffic Stats section will show you the network traffic statistics sorted by application.
Within the accessory view, you will see the application-level statistics:
- Customize your view into the following periods: daily, weekly, or monthly
- View the amount of network traffic coming in and out.
Within the content view, you will see a list of all the following:
- All Applications with network access.
- The amount of network traffic for that specific application.
- The amount of RAM used by this application.
- Hovering and clicking the (i) icon reveals details such as code signature validity and more.
